Scorpion Fire Complex Burns on Modoc National Forest

Tulelake, CA-- UPDATE:

Scorpion Fire Complex Burns on Modoc National Forest

News Release

Friday evening at around 6:15, four fires broke out almost simultaneously on the Modoc National Forest about 20 miles southeast of the city of Tulelake. Named the Scorpion Complex, three of the four fires total just over 2900 acres. The smallest fire, Track, was only .1 acres and has been contained. Of the remaining three fires, Scorpion is currently at 1587 acres, Mammoth has burned 1351 acres and Point is listed at 5 acres. The fire was declared 10% contained at noon on Saturday. The causes of the fires are under investigation.

The following resources are committed to the Scorpion Complex:
200 personnel
20 engines
3 dozers
3 water tenders
2 helicopters
2 air tankers

Incident commander Tyler Otterson, stated Saturday that aggressive suppression efforts are focused on perimeter containment of the fires to reduce the potential threat of spread. Mop-up operations will continue until the fires are declared controlled.

As of noon on Saturday there have been no injuries and no evacuations have been ordered. A .500 KV power line remains an area of concern and no structures are threatened.

Cooler weather with higher humidity is expected over the weekend with a 10% chance of rain. Firefighters are preparing for potentially erratic winds from forecasted thunderstorms.

Tulelake Gang Activity and the Tulelake Police Department

Tulelake, CA– There was a confrontation with one of Tulelake’s Gangs and where a fight broke out between 4th and F Steet and 4th and East West Street. Nobody was hurt seriously enough to call for an ambulance. But enough of a disturbance to have the Tulelake residents and neighbors in the area upset with the out of control gang activity in Tulelake.

Two Tulelake police officers were called to the scene along with back up from Malin. As reports were being taken it was noticed that both Tulelake Police officers vehicles were running their engines. One of the Tulelake police officers when questioned about the running of the vehicles made the comment, “that he was on a call”. Yet, the Malin Police Officer had his engine off and the window rolled down. It was also mentioned what did we expect them to do, “ride bicycles”.

With the City of Tulelake cutting back on expenses where City Employee’s have to pick up City Trucks when on call. City employees have to drive their own vehicles to the City Yard to pick up City Trucks for the emergency situations. If other city employees have to conserve on gas at $4.00 a gallon where is the City of Tulelake Police Department immune?

After all the City of Tulelake is going through a budget crunch and needs to make cuts. Where then why is the Tulelake Police Department not required to cut back on their fuel expenses? After all Tulelake citizens are paying for it through higher water and trash bills soon to be raised to help the City of Tulelake get out of the red and back into the black or is that blue depending on what gang you belong too in the City of Tulelake.

Mud slinging at the Tulelake Butte Valley Fair Grounds

Tulelake, CA— On July 3rd the Tulelake Butte Valley Fair Grounds put on a fundraiser for the Tulelake Butte Valley Fair Grounds. Where a crowd of 975 people attended and enjoyed music, good food, the kid’s area and Mud Bogging in the Grand Stands.

It was a great time to spend the day with the kids enjoying all that the Tulelake Butte Valley Fair Grounds has to offer. From the music by Smoking Guns and beer gardens for people to be able to sit back and listen to some music. To watching the Mud Boggers making attempts to be the one to make it through the mud pits.

This year there were no fireworks as each year Tulelake and Malin switch having fireworks. This year it was Malin’s turn to have a classic car show and fireworks, as last year Tulelake had the fireworks and mud bogging. The City of Tulelake loses $3,583 in Funding

Tulelake, CA— State Legislature Passes Last Minute Grab. The bills, AB 108/118, reallocated the roughly $130 million in VLF general revenues that cities have historically received to fund the continuation of the COPS program, grants to Sheriff’s in lieu of booking fees, and other law enforcement programs.

The bottom line, however, may be how the city of Tulelake actually budgeted for COPS and booking fees in the 2011-2012 budget years. If the City of Tulelake wasn’t counting on the COPS (and were counting on the return of booking fees) that’s a gain. But the City of Tulelake will lose all of its general purpose VLF-effectively to fund those law enforcement grants.

The City of Tulelake would lose $3,584.00 from the COPS program funding.
