Tulelake Economic Impact of California Fairs

Tulelake, Calif— A Public Forum meeting was held at the Tulelake Fair Grounds Economic Building to discuss the future of the Tulelake/Butte Valley Fair. Questions were asked and some answered. However, there is no clear-cut answer to the economic impact that the Tulelake/Butte Valley Fair faces in the near future.

People hear all the numbers and the cuts that need to be made because the governor “has proposed to eliminate 100% of all California fair funding in the 2011/12 state budget.” There are 78 Fairs total that this cut will affect, not just Tulelake/Butte Valley Fair.

Now what does that mean? It means that Tulelake/Butte Valley Fair may no longer be able to have free parking and free admission. Something has to give one way or another in-order for the Tulelake/Butte Valley Fair to continue as it has in the past. Changes will have to be made and input from the community as a whole will help with their suggestions and ideas on how to generate income if there is to still be a Tulelake/Butte Valley Fair as we all know it to be and have come accustom to having.

What was discussed that was more realistic was charging for parking and a small gate fee for adults with children free to make it affordable for families to attend, not on just one day but come back for a second and maybe a third time. There were many suggestions made on how the Fair could generate income during the rest of the year that would help sustain it during fair time. Such as having Dinner/Dance/Auctions to help off set the cost of the fair. In-order for the Tulelake/Butte Valley Fair to be able to sustain itself without depending on state monies to do it.

Other ideas included making more use of the fair grounds for other events throughout the year that could generate income to offset what the Tulelake/Butte Valley Fair needs to be financially self-supporting. “The current state funding accounts for nearly 30% of the Tulelake-Butte Valley Fair’s budget, which would of course have a serious impact on the fair’s sustainability. Potential changes that may have to occur in order for the fair to remain sustainable and continue to serve the local communities as one of the greatest, family oriented small fairs in the nation as the Tulelake-Butte Valley has for 60 years!”

Tulelake Honkers vs. Dunsmuir Tigers Feb 8, 2011

Tulelake, Calif— This afternoon at the Tulelake High School Gym the Tulelake Honkers JV Boys team vs. Dunsmuir Tigers JV Boys team. Where in the first quarter the score was 12 Tulelake Honkers and 10 Dunsmuir Tigers.
By the second quarter Tulelake Honkers’ score were 23 to 16 Dunsmuir Tigers.

By the third quarter Dunsmuir Tigers were catching up with Tulelake Honkers 41 to 32 Dunsmuir Tigers.

The fourth quarter ended in a tie Tulelake Honkers 53 to 53 Dunsmuir Tigers. Tulelake Honkers and Dunsmuir Tigers went into over time with the final score Tulelake Honkers 68 to 59 Dunsmuir Tigers.

Next up was Tulelake Honkers V Girls team vs. Dunsmuir Tigers V Girls team starting off with the first quarter ending 13 Tulelake Honkers to 12 Dunsmuir Tigers. Only lagging in the first quarter by one point. By the second quarter it was becoming very close game with the second score 31 Tulelake Honkers to 25 Dunsmuir Tigers. By the third quarter things began to change with a ten point spread 46 Tulelake Honkers to 36 Dunsmuir Tigers. In the forth quarter the final score was 66 Tulelake Honkers to 48 Dunsmuir Tigers.
















However during the Girls half time the little boys and girls tikes from the YMCA had a game with their score being 6 to 2. They were fun to watch.
Tulelake Honkers V Boys team vs. Dunsmuir Tigers V Boys started off with the Honkers being down by one in the first quarter 13 Tulelake Honkers to 14 Dunsmuir Tigers. But by the second quarter Tulelake Honkers V Boys team were out in front 33 Tulelake Honkers to 25 Dunsmuir Tigers.
By the third quarter Tulelake Honkers V Boys team jumped ahead and didn’t look back. The Tulelake Honkers V boys scored 52 to 41 Dunsmuir Tigers V boys. In the final quarter of the game Tulelake Honkers V boys ran with the ball against to Dunsmuir Tigers V boys. Final score 77 Tulelake Honkers to 52 Dunsmuir Tigers at the Tulelake home coming game at the Tulelake High School Gym.

Goal To Get Grants Updated

Tulelake, Calif— First up at the Feb 7th City Council Meeting was the current status of the upcoming Sewer Treatment plant grants. Where Jim Cook, wastewater project consultant brought the city council up to date as to when the grants will be available for the Sewer Treatment plant.

“Goal to get Grants”, said Jim Cook, wastewater project consultant. To seek the grants that are available for this project.

Next item discussed on the agenda was a question as to when the audit will be completed as the waiting game continues. It was suggested that seeking another auditor might be a better way to go in-order to expedite the process by getting a bid from an auditor out of Klamath Falls.

There was a request to obtain bids for an Asbestos/Lead Abatement Consultant for the Booster Pump Station to prepare a report and specifications for the removal of asbestos and/or lead, before any work can be done on the Booster Pump Station, in-order to get that project rolling.

The Parks Grants for Roper and Veteran’s Parks improvements are required to be completed by April 30, 2011. The funds can be spent on Ridgeview Park improvements too.

A bid was approved in the amount of $3,875.00 to remove two Willow, one Maple, one Elm and one Fir tree from Roper Park. Eight shade trees were approved for $1,480.00 to be planted.

Also approved were 9 flags for Veterans Park for $332.25 to replace old worn out flags.

Other discussion included the presentation of a quote to paint City Water Tower and Water Storage Tank by Councilman Tom Cordonier.

City Attorney Megan Annand was approved to attend the PERMA meeting in Palm Springs. Past due invoices were approved and Payable General Fund Account Balance brought up to date; along with the status of Water/sewer billings to be going out by end of the week; according to Candace Jefferies, Director of Finance.
